CRTM Cattolica Eraclea
The Sea Turtle Rescue Centre of the Cattolica-Eraclea is managed by CTS and it is located inland from Agrigento, in a strategic position for the care of sea turtles. The Centre was established in 2005 to fill the absence of a structure enabled the recovery of sea turtles in the southern coast of Sicily. This gap is not allowed to specimens of Caretta caretta caught accidentally by fishermen operating in the navies of Licata, Marsala, Mazara del Vallo, Porto Empedocle Sciacca or, to be properly cared for and rehabilitated. The animals recovered are hosted at a structure with infirmary, operating room and capacious tanks for the storage of sea turtles. Outside there are aviaries for the rehabilitation phase of birds and mammals. The Sea Turtle Rescue Centre in these years of continuous work has saved more than 1,200 between raptors, mammals and turtles, almost always innocent victims of human actvities.
Main activities of the Center:
- Recovery turtles in trouble in the Pelagie Islands
- Biometric data detection, parasitological, ecotoxicological and transactions relating to marking animals
- Agreements with universities for thesis and internships in veterinary medicine, biology and marine biology to be carried out at the Centre.
In the period 2009-2012 were carried out approximately fifty operations on specimens of Caretta caretta.
