Three new entrants to Asinara RCST

Three new arrivals were registered at the Asinara RCST in the month of February. The Caretta caretta specimens were welcomed by the CRAMA staff following reports received from Northern Sardinia and Corsica.

One of the three specimens was taken by FV Battelliere, which has found the turtle in their trawl nets during their fishing activities in the Gulf. The specimen, nicknamed Lia by the operators, is now housed in one of the tanks of the center and the first analysis shows a state of constipation due to the ingestion of debris and plastic.

Two are the turtles recovered in Corsica and conferred on the staff of the center with the help of recovery racing organizations of marine animals.

One of the two, Cathy, was recovered in Ile Rousse in critical condition. Unfortunately it failed to survive despite rescue loaned. The specimen had a strong state of anemia and infection, with hemorrhagic areas localized in the liver area.

Valentina, found beached in the Bonifacio area, one is still alive and well despite major damage reported to the fins following an entanglement event in an abandoned network. The specimen was found with a front limb amputee.

A fourth specimen of Caretta caretta has arrived at the center in late January. Gigliola, this is his name, was named after the place names of the area where it was found: the area of ​​Punta Giglio promontory, this, overlooking the waters of the Marine Protected Area of ​​Capo Caccia and Isola Piana. The specimen has severe constipation problems following ingestion of plastic debris likely origin. Despite a strong difficulty in swallowing food, Gigliola is recovering barely feed themselves.

The important work of recovery continues, for several years now, since the CRAMA staff and made possible thanks to the work Ente Parco dell'Asinara and collaborative network implementation with fishermen and institutions dedicated to the preservation of the sea.
